US Treasury Department Exposed As Chinese Hackers Breach 400 Devices, Including Janet Yellen’s Computer: Report

Chinese state-sponsored hackers have breached hundreds of devices at the US Treasury Department, according to a new report. The attackers accessed 400 laptop and desktop computers at the department including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s computer, reports Bloomberg, citing two people familiar with the matter. An early investigation has found employee usernames and passwords were accessed, along with at least 3,000 unclassified files. The department’s email and classified systems were not breached and on Yellen’s device, less than 50 files were reportedly accessed. The hackers appeared to be looking for information on sanctions and international affairs. They also accessed data on ongoing investigations at the Committee on Foreign Investment, which is an inter-agency body that reviews foreign investments in US businesses to identify potential national security risks. The Treasury Department reportedly discovered the breach after receiving a warning from BeyondTrust Corp. The access management firm notified the Treasury that its network had been exploited on December 8th. Chinese officials deny any involvement in this and other allegations of state-sponsored cyberattacks.
